Summary: Theater for children

Program Description: Adventure Theater is the Washington area's longest running children's theater, presenting imaginative stagings of fables, fairy tales and popular stories, musicals and children's classics using live actors and puppets. The theater is located in the old arcade building and holds about 192 persons. Performances are 45 to 75 minutes in length, on Saturdays and Sundays and most shows are for ages 4 and up.

Summary: CAT is a non profit educational organization working to make positive and permanent change in schools.

Program Description: Through four programs, Workshop in the Art of Teaching, the Professional Development Academy, Summer STEP: Student and Teaching Enrichment Project and Reading Works! - CAT works with teachers, children and community members to make D.C. public schools institutions of which we can all be proud. Programs also serve as models for effective grassroots school reform elsewhere in the country.

Summary: The mission of CF is to improve the lives of children and those who take care of them, including parents, child care center staff and family child care providers through advocacy, research, information and training.

Program Description: CF's National Trainer's Bureau offers training to family childcare providers and center-based personnel on issues concerning the development and well being of young children. The Early Childhood Care & Education Project develops and provides training curricula for childcare workers. CF also offers a national newsletter, the CF Child Care Bulletin, providing up-to-date information on a wide range of topics of interest to early child care providers.

Summary: An interactive nature and science museum for children.

Program Description: School programs at Discovery Creek's Children's Museum operate out of two sites, an historic schoolhouse on MacArthur Blvd. and a renovated stable at Glen Echo Park. The interactive outdoor environmental programs have animal, science and nature themes and include hands on activities, live animals, and outdoor exploration on nature trails. Programs for Pre-K are 60 minutes long and children must be at least 3 years old.

Summary: Develops and delivers children and family literacy programs that help prepare young children for reading and motivate school age children to read regularly.

Program description: A national nonprofit that works with groups to promote reading among young people. Its method is to motivate youngsters to read by letting them choose and keep books they like and by showing them reading is important. Run by volunteers organized by you and RIF, the children will pick out the books at book events or festive occasions when the kids are invited to choose and keep a book of their own. RIF's highest priority is on the nation's neediest children from birth to three years of age.

Program Provides: Technical support in running a RIF program such as fundraising, book ordering and volunteer recruitment. Book discounts negotiated by the national office Matching funds for programs serving economically stressed communities

Fee: The program will cost the center money whether it be for the books, distribution or book events. But child care centers may qualify for funding. Call RIF for details and application.
